Senior Accelerator Engineer

ScanTech is seeking a Senior Accelerator Engineer to design and optimize linear accelerator (LINAC) devices, conduct tests and experiments, analyze and interpret experimental data, interact with in-house technical and engineering staff, and integrate the work of outside consultants to support the design, construction and operation of the company’s world-class Electronic Cold-Pasteurization (ECP™) facilities.  The position of Senior Accelerator Engineer will report to the Vice President of R&D and will support STS’s engineering and capital projects team.  The candidate will be expected to participate in all phases of the project cycle, including but not limited to design, construction, manufacturing, installation, testing, experimentation, commissioning and follow-up support of its operational, manufacturing and research and test facilities on an as needed basis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Candidate will work on a broad range of challenging problems involving RF cavities and related structures (Power Couplers, Pickups and Kickers, Circulators, RF Power Amplifiers, Waveguides, RF Windows, etc.), RF infrastructure and facilities, cavity-beam interactions RF Pulse power systems, and particle accelerator beam dynamics. The candidate will also operate and upgrade of accelerators and provide testing and commissioning of new accelerator systems and R&D toward future ECP™ facilities.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Facilitate the interaction between the engineering and physics teams; coordinate the work of outside consultants and ensure tight integration and efficient knowledge transfer
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain LINACS, including control systems, power supplies, and associated electronics
  • Write detailed specifications, procedures, and reports to support LINAC development projects
  • Ensure that approved LINAC testing and experiments are successful
  • Coordinate and perform R&D activities with technical staff to:
    • Understand the physics to prepare experiments or tests
    • Prepare requirements for beam optics and dosimetry
    • Set-up tests and experiments
    • Verify that experiments run accordingly to the approved plan and procedures
    • Verify that beam/dose delivered is in accordance with requirements
    • Enhance the LINAC design and performance


  • Required: Ph.D. in accelerator, beam, or plasma physics Electrical or Accelerator engineering, or related discipline
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in designing, building, or operating complex LINACs or high energy particle systems
  • Strong background in LINAC science or charged particle beam physics
  • Experience with accelerator beam transport systems, vacuum equipment, magnetic spectrometers, radiation detectors, nuclear physics electronics, or data acquisition systems
  • A thorough understanding of particle beam interactions with their environment, including RF cavities and other beamline structures
  • Experience with 2D and 3D design, analysis and simulation of electromagnetic structures using modern software tools (e.g. CST Microwave Studio, COMSOL Multiphysics ACE3P, ANYSYS, etc.)
  • Experience in the design, optimization, and operation of RF support systems
  • Experience with RF test instruments (network analyzer, spectrum analyzer, TDR, etc.)
  • Ability to write code in a high level language (Python, Java, Fortran, C) to assist in modeling, simulation and analysis of RF and accelerator physics problems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven decision-making skills and ability to effectively manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision while maintaining a high level of efficiency
  • Ability to thrive in a challenging, dynamic environment. Must be flexible and quick to adapt to sudden changes and issues
  • Outstanding analytical and troubleshooting skills. Able to resolve conflict and drive issues to resolution
  • Detail oriented and organized with a strong discipline of adhering to standards
  • Ability to cooperate and communicate well with engineering, physics/science, project management and procurement groups
  • Experience in mentoring scientists, engineers and technicians to assist in their career development
