Accelerator Engineer

Description:

ScanTech is seeking an Accelerator engineer to assist in the design and optimization of linear accelerator (LINAC) devices, conducting tests and experiments, analyzing and interpreting experimental data and interacting with in-house technical and engineering staff to support the design, construction and operation of the company’s world-class Electronic Cold-Pasteurization (ECP™) facilities.  The position of Accelerator engineer will report to the Vice President of R&D and will support STS’s engineering and capital projects team.  The candidate will be expected to participate in all phases of the project cycle, including but not limited to design, construction, manufacturing, installation, testing, experimentation, commissioning and follow-up support of its operational, manufacturing and research and test facilities on an as needed basis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Candidate will work on a broad range of challenging problems involving RF cavities and related structures (Power Couplers, circulators, Pickups and Kickers, RF Power Amplifiers, Waveguides, RF Windows, etc.), RF infrastructure and facilities, cavity-beam interactions and particle accelerator beam dynamics. The candidate will also assist in the operation of accelerators, testing and commissioning of new accelerator systems and R&D toward future ECP™ facilities.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Design, test, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain LINACS, including control systems, power supplies, and associated electronics
  • Write detailed specifications, procedures, and reports to support LINAC development projects
  • Ensure LINAC testing and experiments are successful
  • Assist technical staff in R&D activities to:
    • Prepare experiments or tests
    • Prepare and facilitate beam optics and dosimetry
    • Set-up tests and experiments
    • Run tests and experiments according to the approved plans and procedures
    • Ensure beam/dose delivered is in accordance with requirements
    • Enhance the LINAC design and performance

Qualifications

  • Required: B.S. in accelerator, beam, or plasma physics, electrical engineering or related discipline
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in designing, building, or operating complex LINACs or high energy particle systems in a professional or academic setting
  • Strong background in LINAC science or charged particle beam physics
  • Experience with accelerator beam transport systems, vacuum equipment, magnetic spectrometers, radiation detectors, nuclear physics electronics, or data acquisition systems
  • A thorough understanding of particle beam interactions with their environment, including RF cavities and other beamline structures
  • Experience with 2D and 3D design, analysis and simulation of electromagnetic structures using modern software tools (e.g. CST Microwave Studio, COMSOL Multiphysics, ACE3P, ANYSYS, etc.)
  • Experience in the design, optimization, and operation of RF support systems
  • Experience with RF test instruments (network analyzer, spectrum analyzer, TDR, etc.)
  • Ability to write code in a high level language (Python, Java, Fortran, C) to assist in modeling, simulation and analysis of RF and accelerator physics problems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven decision-making skills and ability to effectively manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision while maintaining a high level of efficiency
  • Ability to thrive in a challenging, dynamic environment. Must be flexible and quick to adapt to sudden changes and issues
  • Outstanding analytical and troubleshooting skills. Able to resolve conflict and drive issues to resolution
  • Detail oriented and organized with a strong discipline of adhering to standards
  • Ability to cooperate and communicate well with engineering, physics/science, project management and procurement groups
